It is hard to find wood harder than
this in the United States but there is some.
Supposedly. Bodark, also known as
Osage Orange, is without a doubt a hard wood and difficult to turn at
times. Everything you use has to always
be razor sharp. I was in a quandary as
whether to call this a natural edge bowl or not. It certainly is not typical of a natural
edge bowl. But, when you look at one
side and at the bottom you will see it blackened. That was caused by a lightning strike that
was the demise of this tree. Split that big feller right
down the middle! I didn’t think I had
anymore usable wood from that tree until I stumbled upon this piece and I am
glad I did. Another thing about this
wood that Mamma Nature provides is the wood changes color from the golden color
you see here to a burnt orange color. You
will also see the usual minor cracks in the wood that have no effect on the
integrity of the bowl. The outside
diameter is 7 ¾” with the inside at 6 ¼”.
The height is 2 ¾” and the depth 2”.
The volume measured at 2 cups.
This bowl was not meant to be a serving bowl but used for nuts and
candies and other tasty things. Also a
great bowl as a catch all for keys and change.
The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a
walnut oil based wax. This gives the
bowl a nice natural finish that is renewable with olive oil if needed. 27Feb19

10" Pecan Wood Cake/Pastry Stand
This wonderfully shaped stand turned
from beautiful pecan wood will really stand out on your table. With diameter of the top being 10” it will
work for you standard 9” cakes or cupcakes, sticky buns or whatever else you
want to put on it. The natural beauty of
the wood makes it a real treasure. The
height of the stand is 4” and the base diameter is 4 ¾” so there are no issues
with stability. The wood was sealed with
food grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture. Using this combination of ingredients gives
the stand a nice hard long lasting natural finish. 23Feb19

100th Cottonwood Serving Bowl
Yep.
This is the 100th cottonwood bowl that I have turned since I
started cataloging them. So,
theoretically it could be the 125th bowl. You might want to use this bowl for veggies
or even smashed spuds. Another use is as
a pretty big fruit bowl. And, lest we
forget that it may be used as a large popcorn bowl! Can’t forget the popcorn. Now not every family has a use for a bowl of
this size as it is 11 ½” in diameter, 4 ½” high, and 3 ½” deep. With that diameter it does take up a bit of
table space. But it does hold 1
gallon. That is a lot of veggies or
popcorn. You will see a nice lip on this
bowl for ease in handling, even though it only weighs 3 pounds. The wood was sealed with two coats of food
grade walnut oil. Then the finishing was
done with several coats of a walnut oil/shellac mixture. Using a combination like this gives the bowl
a nice hard long lasting natural finish.
Great looking bowl with the natural colors. There is a little bit of “pithing” here and
there that would not sand out and adds to the rustic appearance of the
bowl. 20Feb19 BLCW100

Elegant Pecan Wood Pedestal Jar
There is no doubt that this
lovely pecan jar is elegant. Clean yet
simple lines highly define it. Add to
that the outstanding natural color of the wood adding in heaps of spalting, you
gotta say WOW! You need to also add a
bit of knot holes and worm holes to it as well.
That gives a nice rustic and warm feeling to the jar. Fill it with pistachios, or other nuts or
even candies. Lots of other tasty treats
will fit in this jar that hold 3 cups.
You must also consider that the wood was sealed with food grade walnut
oil and then finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture. Not sure just how many coats of the finish
were applied as all was done with it spinning on the lathe. But using a combination such as that gives
the jar a nice hard long lasting natural finish. The diameter is 6 ½” with a total height of 8
½”. The base diameter is 3 ¾” and the
depth of the vessel is 2 ½”. You know
that if you have this jar sitting on your table or desk, someone is gonna ask
about it. 13Feb19 BXP96

Wonderfully Colored Pecan Serving Bowl
Oh, my! Does this bowl have wonderful natural
coloring or not? You just gotta say yes
it does. You take into consideration
what natural colors Mamma Nature put in this wood, then add some great spalting
and you have a true winner. There is
some neat looking knot holes trying to form on the lip that I left for a real
nice rustic appeal. That does not take
away from the bowl’s measured capacity of 6 cups. You may use this bowl with total confidence
as the wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil. After a couple of coats of that the bowl was
finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture.
This gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish. There is a nice lip for those who like them
for ease in handling. The diameter is
10” with a height of 3 ½” and a depth of 2 ½”.
Great sized bowl with many uses for you to explore. 6Feb19
