Been Busy
Yeah. I have been busy, but not turning wood. Been taking some time to literally tear the shop apart and do some major cleaning. Also building some new work tables. In doing this I also able to better utilize the space that I have and therefore more foot room for ease and moving about. Should be back in operation in 2-3 days.

4 Footed Pecan Natural Edge Bowl
Now if this isn’t a rustic gem, I
don’t know what is! Lookie here! You have natural edge with bark, worm holes,
knot holes, spalting. Did I leave
anything out? The luscious natural
colors of this pecan wood are simply fabulous.
The bowl part is only 1 ½” deep on the lowest side. I thought about trying to get a bit deeper,
but with the worm holes I was afraid I might accidentally go through the
bottom. The base is 9” square and the
piece has a total height of 4 ¼”. I
didn’t measure the volume of the bowl but I would estimate it to be around 2
cups to the lowest brim area. The bark
received a helping hand to stay intact with some clear glue on the inside of
the bowl and out. The wood was not only
sealed but basically saturated with food grade walnut oil. Then it was finished with walnut oil and
shellac mixture with some walnut oil based wax added. Using a combination like this gives the piece
a nice hard natural long lasting finish.
Certainly a one of a kind piece.

Majestic Hackberry Serving Bowl
When you look at all the coloring
involved naturally with this hackberry bowl I think there is a certain majestic
look to it. Another great quality about
this bowl is it has a small “footprint” and a high volume. After all the bowl is only 9 ¾” in diameter
and holds a whopping ¾ gallon measured to the brim. The height is 5” and the depth is 4” and even
with the concave bottom that leaves a nice bottom for stability. This type of bowl, with it’s dimensions are
really popular with households that what a large capacity bowl but don’t have
really large dining tables. This bowl
will work really well for that. There is
a nice lip for ease in holding and picking up the bowl. There are a couple of small defect burring
spots right under the lip. They add a bit
of homemade character to the bowl. Fill
it with salads, veggies or even popcorn!
After all the wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then
finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture.
A combination like this gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural
finish. With almost half of the bowl the
dark gray to almost black shade, all provided my Mamma Nature, this bowl is
highly attractive and will get folks to talking when they see it. After all besides being rather majestic
looking it does have a certain WOW FACTOR to it. 12Dec18

Unusual Pecan Display Bowl
There is no doubt that this bowl is
unusual. And, beautiful. Naturally beautiful. When you take the natural coloration of pecan
wood, and you add the spalting that is self evident, you have something really
special. I want to make sure that I get
this in, this bowl will not hold liquids so it is mainly for displaying
things. Fruits, nuts, candies,
etc.. All dry items, please. With the way the cracking is on the inside
bottom area I was unable to seal it good to hold liquids. But, all was reinforced with clear glue and
natural dust. Some may not have noticed,
but this bowl also has 7 sides.
Yep. Count ‘em. 7.
Definitely unusual for a bowl.
The general diameter is 9” with a height of 3 ½” and a depth of 2
¾”. The volume was measured at 5
cups. The wood was sealed with food grade
walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture. A combination such as this gives the bowl a
nice hard long lasting natural finish.

Lovely Nonagon of Pecan
First thing some folks are gonna say
is what in the world is a nonagon? It’s
a 9 sided object. This pecan bowl has 9
sides. How about that? Seen one before this one? Probably not.
This beautiful wood has such natural coloring and spalting in it that it
almost has a marbled look to it. When
you look at the second photo there is a spot on one side that seems to want to
stay sorta white in color no matter what I do.
So, there it is as it wants to be.
This bowl has simple yet graceful lines to it. You might use it for nuts or candies or other
tasty tidbits. The general diameter is 7
½” with a height of 3” and a depth of 2”.
The volume measures to just over 2 cups.
The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a
walnut oil/shellac mixture. With a
combination like that the bowl has a nice hard long lasting natural
finish. 5Dec18 BLP207

Exquisite 6 Sided Pecan Bowl
This 6 sided bowl turned from
beautiful pecan wood truly is exquisite.
After all, take a look at the grain patterns along with the spalting
lines that Nature added. The bowl holds
a useful 2 ½ cups. That is a pretty fair
amount of pistachios or other tasty goodies.
The diameter of the bowl is 7 ½” with a height of 2 1/2” and a depth of
1 ¾”. The wood was sealed with food
grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture. Using this combination gives the bowl a nice
hard long lasting natural finish. Great
bowl for nuts, candies, and even as a catch all bowl for keys and change. 4Dec18

Amazing Pecan Burl Bowl
Amazing? Oh, yeah.
This burl bowl turned from pecan wood is definitely that. It has a bit of everything going for it. You have knots, natural edge, spalting and
beautiful grain pattern. When you look
at the bottom you see a knot that has a crack in it that I left alone. That just makes this bowl more special. Fellow turners will tell you that when one is
turning a bowl such as this, you are taking a few risks in not knowing what is
further in the wood. It could simply
blow apart on you. This one held
together nicely. The widest point on
this bowl is 8” and the narrowest is 7 ½”.
The height is 2 ¾” and a depth of 2”.
The volume measured to being 2 ½ cups.
The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil, 2 coats. The finishing was done with a walnut
oil/shellac mixture. This combination
gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish. This is a great candy or nut bowl. 4Dec18
