5 3/4" Osage Orange Pedestal Bowl

Oh, Osage Orange!  Some know it as Bodark, Bois d’ Arc, Hedge Apple, or even Horse Apple.  All the same tree, folks!  And it is an extremely hard wood.  As far as in the United States there is one other wood that is supposedly harder.  I think it was called Black Locust.  Anyway, the grain patterns in this wood are really nice.  As normal this wood has some minor cracks which I reinforced with clear glue.  Should never cause a problem.  This wood gives off a natural rustic appeal that is hard to pass up.  The diameter is 5 ¾” with a height of 2 ¾” and depth at 2”.  The volume measured at 1 ½ cups.  I really thought it would be 2 cups but did not make it.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then the finishing was done with a walnut oil/shellac mixture.  This gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  BLBA98  26Jun19

10 1/2" 1/2 Gallon Pecan Serving Bowl

No need to add anything to this beautiful pecan bowl to make it stand out.  The natural color of this bowl with a tad bit of spalting added to it just simply makes it easy on the eyes, for sure.  There is a bit of a crack on the lip that I reinforced for good measure with clear glue and natural dust.  This little natural defect helps add to the rustic appearance of this bowl.  Not that pecan needs any help!  The diameter of the bowl is 10 ½” and the height is 3 ¼”.  The depth comes to 2 ½” and the volume measures ½ gallon to the brim.  That is a lot of veggies, smashed spuds, and other tasty items.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture.  A combination like this gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  There is a nice lip for ease in handling.  Certainly a one of a kind piece.  24Jun19  BLP217

8 3/4" Pecan Bowl With Turquoise

Once in a while I turn a bowl that says give me some turquoise!!!  Well, who am I not to listen to it?  The turquoise on the lip started out being in a really nice looking gap in the wood.  After all that was set, while sanding part of that broke off, so had to reshape it.  Then to make things look good I had to add more turquoise to that area.  All well and good and looks just fine.  There was another area under the lip that I added some to as well.  So for those who like some extra color added to the wood beside what Mamma Nature gave it, this bowl is perfect for you.  The diameter is 8 ¾”, the height is 2 ¼”, and the depth 1 ¾”.  The volume measured to 4 cups.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then the bowl was finished with two coats of a walnut oil and shellac mixture.  This gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  14Jun19  BLP216

Mountain Cedar Display Bowl

Now and then every wood turner has worked on a piece that required a degree of pucker power.  You’re all puckered up not knowing if it was gonna hold together or not.  This one did, but not all do.  Taken from the crotch of the tree, this bowl really has some rustic character to it.  I toyed with the idea of using either some turquoise or red coral on it, but decided against it.  I think it came out just fine naturally.  Mountain Cedar, or also known as Juniper, has some nice coloration to it.  Though it does not have the red tint that most folks relate to cedar it does have the cedar odor to it.  Any of the minor cracks were reinforced with clear glue and natural dust.  The length is generally 9” and the width about 7”.   The height is 2” and the depth is about 1 ¾”.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with two coats of shellac with some walnut oil based wax mixed in.  All of this gives the bowl a nice natural finish.  14Jun19  BLMC9

Lovely 6 Cup Cottonwood Serving Bowl

Cottonwood has such great coloration to it.  The light and dark colors meld together so well, it makes you not want to put anything in the bowl.  You just want to look at the wood.  Lightweight yet durable, this wood was quite popular in America with the westward migration.  When settlers were traveling west, when they saw cottonwood trees they knew there was water.  They used the wood for plates, bowls, utensils, furniture and other useful items.  This bowl is 9 ½” in diameter, 3” high, and 2 ¼” deep.  The volume measured to 6 cups.  The bowl does hold liquids so feel free to use it for pretty much anything.  You will also find a nice handling lip midway up the sides.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and then finished with a mixture of walnut oil, shellac, and walnut oil based wax.  This bowl has a certain rustic appeal to it with the natural colors and wood defects that are natural with this wood.  You will find some burring areas that are inherent with this wood.  This just adds to the appeal of the piece.  10Jun19  BLCW101
