Versatile 7 3/4" Cottonwood Jar
You might ask what I mean when I say this jar is versatile. Well, think about it. You may put cookies In it, or candy, or even nuts as in the photos. There is no limit to what you might put in it and the volume measures to a whole 4 cups. Personally I’d use it to hide my personal stash of M&M’s. The wood was sealed with 2 coats of food grade walnut oil and then finished with, well several coats of a walnut oil/shellac mixture. Not sure how many coats were applied to it. This combination gives the jar a nice hard long lasting natural finish. The diameter of the jar is 7 ¾” and the total height is 4”. The vessel height is 3 ¼” and the vessel depth is 2 ½”. The unique color of the wood along with some spalting that Mamma Nature added to the mix make this a beautiful jar to have. 22Jan18 BXCW1 For more info see:

Lovely wood is cottonwood and this ones more striking with the spalting. I love to see a bit of spalting but sometimes the wood where the spalting is could be on the soft side and makes sanding harder to do. Nice shape to this jar with a nice fitting lid. Another of your excellent turnings my friend.
ReplyDeleteHi Les! You are right about the sanding part. Cottonwood is soft to start with and can really get difficult to get a smooth surface. The one thing that I always seem to have a difficult time with in cottonwood is the lids. No matter how dry the wood is they still warp some. Hopefully this one will maintain it's shape. Take care my friend and good hearing from you.
