8 1/2" White Oak Display Bowl

Looking at this bowl makes me think back to the saloons in the west back in the 1800’s.  The saloons were in the habit of having either salted peanuts or potato chips in bowls on the bar for the paying customers.  From what I have read both were loaded with salt for two reasons.  First is the salt was used to help preserve the goodies and also the salt made the customers thirstier so they drank more.  What a concept!  I just picture a bowl like this used for that.  This bowl has the usual characteristics I find in this wood.  Minor cracks throughout and some beautiful warm coloring.  This bowl does not hold liquids.  You may put whatever else you desire in it as long as it is more of a solid.  Like nuts, candy, fruits, and even popcorn.  Lots of uses for a bowl like this.  The diameter is 8 ½” with a height of 3” and a depth of 2 ¼”.  The volume measured to be 4 cups.  The wood was sealed with food grade walnut oil and finished with a walnut oil/shellac mixture.  This combination gives the bowl a nice hard long lasting natural finish.  6Mar19  BLWO18

  1. This Oak bowl looks fabulous with that beautiful grain structure and the beautiful colour. If I remember correctly oak is a dense wood which can be a bit unforgiving on your turning tools. Another beautifully turned and finished bowl.

  2. Oh, yeah. Unforgiving is a polite way of saying that. I like oak as well, but white oak is abnormally tough. Especially since all of mine is already dried out. Singularly tough and catchy.
